Spring is springing, but hold off on rushing outside for your bike ride!

70 degrees and above in mid-February in Kansas City... unreal!

If you're experiencing anything like what we have going on in the Midwest this winter, the temptation is there to find any way possible to get that bike ride in outdoors and ditch the trainer.

I mean how often are you going out in shorts in February and play with the neighbors!?

But wait, should you cast aside the trainer?

I pose the answer, no.

Hear me out.

There's a couple reasons why you would ride outside on the ole two wheeled steed.
  1. Leisure
  2. Training
Is leisure is your mission, stop reading now and get out there.

If you're training, thinking specifically for triathlons, then read on.

There's great gains to be had riding on the road, but there's great strategies to implement that makes riding indoors on trainers the corner stone of a solid training plan.

1. Weather independent // below 0 outside? Rain? Snow? 110 degrees? O-dark thirty in the morning and don't have a light? None of that matters. All you need is your bike on a trainer in your pain cave and the forecast just doesn't matter. You eliminate weather as an excuse not to hit your workouts.

2. Time // don't need 5 layers to ride in the cold and the 20 minutes it takes to get it all on.  Don't need to account for time to unload and get your bike ready to ride.  Don't need to have backup time for flats or wasted time being stranded with a mechanical issue. Don't need 10 minutes to shower with sunscreen.  Don't need 10 minutes to find gps signal. Just plop your tire pump by your bike mounted full time on the trainer and throw on bike shorts and workout shorts and walk to your pain cave and you're on.

3. Safety // rarely do you need to worry about vehicular traffic on your trainer. There might be a random trash truck driving into your house, but odds are you won't get hit by a car, run off the road by a car or harassed by a jerk in a car.  No need for sunscreen and worry of melanoma.  Unless your on rollers, odds are low that you'll need a helmet for a crash. Potholes aren't a problem on a trainer. No need for dog repellent on your trainer unless you live with Cujo. Flat front tire during your ride? Ride on indoors and no worry about losing control on the road.  Not only do cars pose a risk, but when some neighbors headed out for a mid-winter 70 degree day ride and I missed out, I later found out they crossed paths with a group ride that the tail end joined them and decided to pull a u-turn and caused a bike pile up.  Needless to say I wasn't sad I missed a bike wreck due to poor cycling etiquette by inexperienced riders.

4. Better workouts // YES, you can get a better workout on a trainer than the road.  On the road we have a tendency to spin easier in the wind and up hills. Sketchy road conditions can lead to shower riding.  With today's trainer offerings you can manage so many metrics to dial in the exact workout you want. Power. Cadence. Speed. Heart rate. You name and you can test it and train by it.  Unless you know your local routes and exactly which to take for power intervals, speed work or hills and hopefully a strong wind or weather don't house your goals, riding outside is less than ideal when you have a goal for your workout. This is assuming you or your coach has developed a solid training plan.

5. Teamwork makes the dream work. Along the lines of time, a large contingency of triathletes are parents. Even more may have young kids you can't just ditch to go ride outside. Killing two birds with one stone is getting a ride while your kiddos get their steps up on the treadmill next to you. You're spending time with your kids showing them the work it takes to accomplish your goals. They're getting positive influence to get some physical movement going. You all get some bonding time. They get off the iPad or video games.

Don't get me wrong, you need to ride outside.  I recently changed up my cockpit and on the trainer it felt fine, but outside in the wind with race wheels, I realized the elbow pads were too close to keep control in higher wind gusts. You don't want to spend 100 percent of time on the trainer to find out you lose confidence on the road on race day.

But, there are affordable trainers out there that you can obtain your training gains you want without having to spend all your time on the roads (I just ordered my CycleOps Magnus Trainer). You have to sit back and look at your riding goals and what your reality is. You don't have to be stuck in the whoa is me mode if you can't get outside.  The days of trashing your bike training over the winter are gone and I challenge you to really consider if your goals will be met with 100 percent outside riding.

Personally I have saved what money  I would have spend in cold weather riding gear and invested it in better trainers with power, speed and cadence output. I opted to go with the trainer with power over bike mounted power meters since I spend 70 to 80 of my riding time indoors and use road and tri bikes switching between bikes semi often.  My situation demands a change of approach or I'll be stuck in training paths of past with minimal year over year gains.

Since I don't have hours of excess time, I've narrowed my focus to get the most of my time and workouts that I can.  Less time to get ready and get done means more time on the trainer working killer sets building gains and making progress.

Post off the beaten path of Triathlon // New Training Buddy from #MOGS

Yes, it's been a while since last post...

Work has kept me busy and any free time away from the desk is either with family or getting a workout in.  Thus, sadly writing race reports and blog posts take a back seat.

But, I finally got a few minutes to share some exciting news around the house.

We adopted another rescue dog, but not just any rescue.

Go big or go home, and we went big.

Welcome 95 pounds of fury dog, Kinsgton.  He's the German Shepherd on the right with our 9 year old black lab.

We were at a MOGS event a month or so ago and met Kingston and immediately he clicked with our 5 humans (according to my son, we are humans, not just people).

They are a great organization focused on re-homing German Shepherds and finding them forever homes.  They have helped over 1000 dogs get back to health and find homes... 1000.  We thought Kingston was such a great looking and well mannered dog that by the time we applied and were approved, he would be gone.  But, as luck would have it he had one adoption fall through and we got dibs.

We had him over a few times to meet the kids more extensively and meet our lab and terrier mutt from SPCA.  The terrier was fine, but the lab wasn't sure about this 95 pound beast.  It's taken some assimilation, but dogs are getting along and Kingston is getting acclimated to his new home and family.

Sadly he came from a backyard breeder that kept in horrible conditions and allowed him to have skin issues fester for YEARS.  MOGS started treatment and we are working hard to get him over the hump.  He's probably more lethargic than he would be while he fully recovers, but I'll be the first to admit it's probably for the better he's laid back and not too hyper while getting used to the new home.

I write this post up not just to share the news about our new addition, but to also bring awareness to organizations like MOGS taking in purebred specific dogs knowing what they need and finding them homes.

Take a peek below at what Kingston was like when MOGS got him.  It's heart breaking that someone would keep a dog like that and profit off him without consideration of his well being.

Think about that next time you consider buying a purebred dog from a breeder or pet shop.  Ask to see the parents if on site.  The stud dog may not be there and you may not know what genetics are going into your dog.

Be informed.  Consider rescues as the foster families keep them for a while to get them healthy and make sure they are adoptable.  For 3+ months the foster family for Kingston had him and knew his temperament, how he reacted to kids and other dogs... things you just don't know when you buy a puppy from a store or breeder.

Rescues can make great pets!

One of 50 finalists in Americas for ASICS #BEATTHESUN --> VOTE FOR ME!

So a while ago I applied to the Beat the Sun Challenge presented by ASICS.

Beat the Sun Training Program is an exclusive, comprehensive plan designed to help you achieve your personal fitness goals, no matter what level athlete you are. Expertly developed by ASICS seasoned coaches, this program will guide you along your path to wellness, from day one to June 21.

It was a great way to have a target to keep running and some honestly just to have fun with and goof around with.  That was until I the sent me notice I was 1 of 50 finalists for the actual event live at Mont Blanc.

Do you have the same question as I did?  Where exactly is Mont Blanc?

Mont Blanc or Monte Bianco, both meaning "White Mountain", is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest peak in Europe outside of the Caucasus range.

How do you help me get there?  Simple.  Drop a vote for me at http://races.asics.com/us/en-us/beatthesun/vote - making sure to pick the Americas to see me as an option.  Until some friends recently made me aware it was live, I had no idea voting was going down.

You can vote once per day (per computer).  Hit your friends' computers, parents, family, mailman, phones, iPads... ANYTHING!  I need votes asap as I'm currently 540 votes down.  ;)

2016 Race Schedule - LETS GET READY TO RACE!

So, first race is coming up this weekend, so I thought better post my signed up schedule and dream schedule...

This weekend kicks off the official endurance race season for me.  First up is a half marathon run in Kansas City that I've been involved with the race since it's inception 6 years ago.  It's a great course, great time of year and traditionally a PR setter for my half marathon distance.  We shall see if the tradition continues for 2016.

Without further delay, the schedule!
Keep in mind I signed up early bird for great price cuts, so even though I am registered, there's always life that happens that may change the schedule.  ;)
  • 4/9/16 : Rock the Parkway Half Marathon
  • 5/15/16 : Kansas City Triathlon Olympic Distance
  • 6/3/16 : Hospital Hill 5k
    • Part of the Re Run series for the 5k Friday and Half Saturday
  • 6/4/16 : Hospital Hill Half Marathon
  • 6/5/16 : Legends Free State 70.3 Triathlon
    • Used to be the Ironman 70.3 Kansas until IM opted not to keep the license.  Not going for any PR here, just racing for fun after a 5k and Half Marathon two days before.
  • 7/10/16 : Shawnee Mission Triathlon Long Course
  • 7/17/16 : Ironman 70.3 Racine
  • 8/7/16 : Matt Mason Triathlon Sprint
  • 8/7/16 : Ironman Boulder 140.6
    • 2015 RACE REPORT
    • Yep, I know, on the same day as Matt Mason.  If things work out, I'll be there, but it's 50/50 at best.
  • 8/13/16 : Age Group Olympic Nationals in Omaha
    • Wish list race.  Lots of travel before this race for races, so it probably won't happen unless the stars align.
  • 8/27/16 : Cedar Creek Triathlon Sprint
  • 10/15/16 : Kansas City Marathon
And that's all I'm signed up for at the moment.  Things could change, schedules could get altered.  Anyone with a new baby at home knows all to well there is no schedule!  :)

3.9 for 39 : Starting Year 39 with @ASICS and @LIFETIMEFITNESS

So... I'm 1 year away from MIDDLE AGE!

Yes, I have just turned 39.  Eeeek.  I'm not counting any more after this, excpet when I sign up for races and have to identify with my correct age group.  At least BQ gets 5 minutes less for the next age group.  Silver lining, right?

So how do you kick off year 39?
  1. Spend some time at the gym.
  2. Try out the new ASICS fuzeX.
  3. Start the rest of your life.

Lets dive into the mundane details.

I started the day with teaching my Triathletes not to drown in the pool for our weekly swim workout!  It was great as we had 4 new members start up in February and the team is really taking off at Lifetime in Overland Park.  Each one is doing great in their own right and we're well on our way to get them to their goals in 2016.
That's right.  I kick back while they suffer.
No day would be complete for the fitness and health minded like some weights and 3.9 miles on the treadmill for 39 years.  It may not be as impressive as 39 for 39 as I was originally wanting to do, but when you have some big tasks on your plate for the short term future, spending 5 to 6 hours on a treadmill wasn't in the cards.  What are you gunna do?

At least I did get some time to kick around the new fuzeX and after having some hesitancy, they actually felt GOOD.  Like my PF wasn't killing me good.  Seriously, they are super comfortale.  Looking forward to more runs in those bad boys.

But that's just fluff, here's the real meat.

After years in the "8-5" grind, it's always been a struggle to get everything in and actually be happy with life.  I'm not talking depression type lows, but always feeling like some part of life that matters had to suffer.  Don't get me wrong, first world problems.  Bills are paid, roof over our heads and tummies are full, but there's more to life than the routine and suddenly you turn around and life is half over and you're caught in the rat race.

It dawned upon me.  Simplicity and stop being different things to different people.  Year 39 has been a true "birthday" in the sense of the realization of how I have been struggling to be things I'm not and in doing so, missing out on the things that I should be. I've placed my faith in the wrong priorities and it's backfired on different levels. Its only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.

I was Mr Work for work people, and they might not have known much about my endurance passions.

I was Mr Family for the kids and wife.

I was Mr Trying to Figure it out for Faith.

But at the end I was just tired and stretched too thin.

New perspective.
  1. Faith
  2. Family
  3. Passion + Work
  4. All Else

Everyone reading this knows more about my Triathlon and Endurance passion that my "day job" and I was what I classified as a closet endurance athlete. Training when I could, always worrying about stuff I should be doing that wasn't what I felt I needed to be doing with my life. This birthday is different. I refuse to be ashamed to be out in the work force and be forced to be something I'm not. I'm passionate about endurance sports, training, racing and getting others around me involved to at least chase some dreams and find some life balance and healthy living along the way! No more closet triathlete!

And last, but not least. If the house burned down and someone stole my tri bike, I'd still have the 4 more important people in my life as I have managed to not hose that up.

Without the support of my awesome wife and our now 3 beautiful kids in my life, it would be a life without meaning. Like all marriages, we have ups and downs, kids in the hospital, real life issues to deal with, but after a hell on earth pregnancy and a premature baby, my wife still has managed to be my rock through tough times and I feel truly blessed to have her and 3 healthy kids as the only birthday present I need.

Have a great rest of the day and do what you are meant to do!
